Ferritin

The body's iron storage protein — low values indicate depletion, high values often reflect inflammation rather than iron overload.

Definition

Ferritin reflects body iron stores; it's the first lab to drop in iron depletion, well before haemoglobin. Low values (<30 ng/mL in most adults) suggest iron-deficiency anaemia. High values can indicate genuine iron overload (haemochromatosis) or — far more commonly — acute-phase inflammation. Interpret alongside CRP or hs-CRP.

Reference Range: Low values (<30 ng/mL in most adults) suggest iron-deficiency anaemia.
