Adiponectin

An adipokine with insulin-sensitising and anti-inflammatory effects — falls as visceral adiposity rises.

Definition

Adiponectin is secreted by adipocytes, paradoxically at higher levels in leaner individuals. It sensitises peripheral tissues to insulin, has anti-inflammatory effects on the vasculature, and is associated with cardiovascular protection. Low adiponectin is a marker of visceral adiposity and metabolic dysfunction; weight loss and exercise both raise it.
