Definition
Adipose tissue is the body's main long-term energy store. Two functional types dominate: white adipose tissue (WAT), which stores triglycerides, and brown adipose tissue (BAT), which burns them for heat. Adipose also functions as an endocrine organ, secreting leptin, adiponectin and inflammatory cytokines. Visceral adipose is metabolically more active and more dangerous than subcutaneous adipose — a driver of metabolic syndrome.
