Clinical Concept

Metabolic Syndrome

A cluster of five conditions — central obesity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, hyperglycaemia, low HDL — that together multiply cardiovascular risk.

Definition

Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when three of five criteria are met: waist circumference above thresholds, triglycerides ≥150 mg/dL, HDL below sex-specific thresholds, blood pressure ≥130/85, and fasting glucose ≥100 mg/dL. It roughly doubles cardiovascular risk and sharply raises type-2 diabetes risk. GLP-1 receptor agonists, Tesamorelin and MOTS-c each target different axes of the syndrome.
