NAFLD / MASLD

Also known as Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease · Metabolic-dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease

Fat accumulation in the liver driven by metabolic dysfunction — renamed MASLD in 2023 to reflect the central role of metabolism.

Definition

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, now termed metabolic-dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is the accumulation of fat in the liver without significant alcohol intake. Associated with visceral adiposity, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. The progressive form (MASH) can lead to fibrosis and cirrhosis. Tesamorelin has shown benefit in dedicated trials; GLP-1s and weight loss in general are the mainstay of treatment.
