Definition

AMP-activated protein kinase is a heterotrimeric enzyme that senses the ratio of AMP to ATP in the cell and switches metabolism to energy-producing pathways when ATP is low. It increases fatty-acid oxidation, glucose uptake and mitochondrial biogenesis. MOTS-c is one of the clearest peptide activators; metformin and exercise are two of the most common non-peptide activators.
