A calculated insulin-resistance score from fasting glucose and fasting insulin — a sensitive early metabolic-dysfunction marker.
Definition
HOMA-IR is computed as (fasting glucose mg/dL × fasting insulin µIU/mL) ÷ 405. Values under 1.5 indicate good insulin sensitivity; 1.5–2.5 is borderline; above 2.5 suggests insulin resistance. Because it uses two cheap labs, it's a high-yield screen for metabolic dysfunction well before HbA1c or fasting glucose move.
