Incretins are gut hormones released in response to nutrient intake that potentiate glucose-dependent insulin secretion. The two main incretins are GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). The incretin effect — the extra insulin produced when glucose is oral rather than IV — is blunted in type-2 diabetes, which is why incretin-mimetic peptides are therapeutic.
