SHBG

Also known as Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin

A hepatic protein that binds testosterone and estradiol — affects how much hormone is bioavailable and how lab values are interpreted.

Definition

SHBG is produced by the liver and binds sex hormones in blood, regulating their bioavailability. Low SHBG is associated with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance; high SHBG is associated with hyperthyroidism and certain hepatic conditions. Correct interpretation of total testosterone requires knowing SHBG — the same total value can reflect very different free-hormone activity depending on SHBG.
