Sleep Architecture

The pattern of sleep stages across the night — deep sleep, REM and light sleep cycles.

Definition

Sleep architecture encompasses the cyclical progression through sleep stages (N1, N2 light sleep; N3 deep sleep; REM). Deep sleep predominates early in the night with peak growth-hormone release; REM dominates later and supports memory consolidation. Fragmented or light sleep undermines recovery, metabolic health, and cognitive function.
